New Delhi: Lionel Messi, Argentina’s iconic captain, will be absent from the South American World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Colombia due to an ankle injury. The Argentine Football Association unveiled a 28-man squad on Monday, with the notable exclusion of the 37-year-old star. Messi, who currently represents Inter Miami, suffered the injury during the Copa America final in the United States last month and is now in the process of rehabilitation at his club.

Messi’s absence is a significant blow for Argentina, who currently lead the South American World Cup qualifying standings with 15 points from six matches. His departure means the team will face these crucial matches without their celebrated forward, who has been a central figure in their recent achievements.

In addition to Messi, goalkeeper Franco Armani and forward Ángel Di María are also missing from the squad. Di María, who recently retired from international football after Argentina’s Copa America victory, will not be available for selection, marking the end of an illustrious chapter in his career with the national team.

Coach Lionel Scaloni has introduced several new players into the squad, including midfielder Ezequiel Fernández and striker Valentín Castellanos. These additions reflect Scaloni’s focus on building a team for the future by integrating younger talent. Emerging players such as Alejandro Garnacho, Valentín Carboni, Valentín Barco, and Matías Soulé have also been called up, offering them valuable international experience.

Argentina is scheduled to face Chile on September 5 at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires, followed by a key fixture against Colombia in Barranquilla on September 10. Despite the absence of key players, the squad remains strong, with experienced professionals like Nicolás Otamendi, Lisandro Martínez, Leandro Paredes, and Rodrigo De Paul poised to lead the team.
