This sportier version starts at Rs 46.90 lakh (ex-showroom) and is based on the 220i M Sport trim.

The Shadow Edition gets a more aggressive look with several blacked-out elements. This includes the iconic kidney grille, headlamp surrounds, rear spoiler, and even the floating hub caps. Inside, the cabin gets a unique touch with the “Illuminated Berlin” trim and a carbon fibre gear selector.

Under the hood, the Shadow Edition retains the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine from the 220i M Sport, producing 179 horsepower and 280 Nm of torque. It comes mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in 7.1 seconds.

BMW i16: The Unmade Successor to the Iconic i8 https://thetimesofhindustan.com/bmw-i16-the-unmade-successor-to-the-iconic-i8/ https://thetimesofhindustan.com/bmw-i16-the-unmade-successor-to-the-iconic-i8/#respond Sat, 17 Feb 2024 12:58:06 +0000 https://thetimesofhindustan.com/?p=1961 New Delhi: BMW envisioned a groundbreaking mid-engine hybrid supercar, the i16, as a successor to the iconic i8. However, this eye-catching creation never went into production, remaining a mystery for four years until BMW’s chief designer, Domagoj Dukek, revealed it on social media. The i16, loosely inspired by the famous M1, could have been BMW’s second special model following the 1978 M1 supercar.

Based on the Vision M Next concept showcased in 2019, the i16 featured subtle modifications to ensure road legality. Dukeck emphasized its potential as a “future classic”, highlighting design elements reminiscent of the M1, such as its angular silhouette, ventilated rear arches and louvred engine lid. The i16 aimed to take advantage of the overall architecture of the i8 to reduce development costs, but it is unclear whether it would have retained the same plug-in hybrid powertrain.

The i8, BMW’s initial plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), is powered by a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with an electric motor, producing 374 hp and 0-100 km/h acceleration of 4.3 seconds. Despite its strengths, production was discontinued in 2020 to pave the way for BMW’s new line of custom electric models such as the iX3 and iX.

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic halted work on the i16 project in 2020, ultimately shelving it due to concerns over high R&D costs and uncertain sales potential. However, M division head Frank van Meel hinted at the possibility of a new hybrid supercar in the future, emphasizing BMW’s continued exploration of such ideas.

Although the i16 will never grace the roads, BMW’s dedication to innovation and performance continues, keeping enthusiasts curious about what the future holds for the brand’s super-sports car aspirations.

BMW Unveils Updated M4 Competition with Enhanced Power and Features https://thetimesofhindustan.com/bmw-unveils-updated-m4-competition-with-enhanced-power-and-features/ https://thetimesofhindustan.com/bmw-unveils-updated-m4-competition-with-enhanced-power-and-features/#respond Wed, 31 Jan 2024 14:50:21 +0000 https://thetimesofhindustan.com/?p=1831 New Delhi: To elevate its position in the competitive sports car segment, BMW has introduced a new look for the M4 Competition. The updated model includes increased engine power, additional features and refined lighting options.

Visual enhancements include new lights at both ends, with the rear lights incorporating the innovative glass fibre bundle technology seen on the limited-run BMW M4 CSL. These updates contribute to giving the 4 Series and M4 a fresh and distinctive look.

Under the hood, the M4 Competition gets a power boost with its twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six engine now delivering 530hp, up from the previous 510hp. Although the torque output remains the same at 650Nm, the peak torque remains the same for an extended RPM range, thereby increasing overall performance.

In terms of drivetrain options, the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) version has been discontinued, leaving the four-wheel-drive xDrive version as the only option. xDrive models can deliver torque exclusively to the rear wheels when stability control is deactivated. Despite the increase in power, on-paper performance figures remain consistent, with a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint time of 3.5 seconds for the coupe and 3.7 seconds for the cabriolet.

Inside the cabin, the M4 retains the dual-screen infotainment and instrumentation display, now updated to software version 8.5. Ambient lighting has been enhanced, offering a choice of nine colours that react dynamically to various stimuli, such as an open door or an incoming phone call.

The facelifted BMW M4 Competition is expected to be launched in India later this year, marking an evolution in the performance and design of the iconic sports car.
