Records Highest Temperature Ever at 52.3°C ! https://thetimesofhindustan.com/delhi-sizzles-records-highest-temperature-ever-at-52-3c/ https://thetimesofhindustan.com/delhi-sizzles-records-highest-temperature-ever-at-52-3c/#respond Wed, 29 May 2024 12:59:51 +0000 https://thetimesofhindustan.com/?p=3469 New Delhi: Delhi residents endured a day of unprecedented heat on Wednesday, with the city recording its highest-ever temperature of 52.3 degrees Celsius at the Mungeshpur weather station, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This scorching heatwave pushed the city’s power demand to a record-breaking high of 8,302 megawatts (MW) in the afternoon.

The extreme temperature brought the capital to a near standstill, with residents seeking refuge indoors and struggling with power outages amidst the surging demand. Thankfully, the relentless heat offered a brief respite in the form of light rain with gusty winds later in the day.

The record-breaking power demand highlights the strain the heatwave placed on Delhi’s infrastructure. Power distribution companies had estimated a peak demand of 8,200 MW for the summer, but Wednesday surpassed all expectations. This surge in demand could lead to potential power outages in the coming days if the heat persists.

Concerned about the water crisis exacerbated by the heatwave, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) announced a fine of Rs 2,000 for anyone caught wasting water. This measure emphasizes the importance of water conservation during these challenging times.

While the recent rain provided temporary relief, Delhi residents brace themselves for the possibility of further heatwaves. The IMD’s forecast remains unclear, but the record-breaking temperatures serve as a stark reminder of the city’s vulnerability to extreme weather events.

New Metro Line Coming to Noida, Stations Announced for Train Service. https://thetimesofhindustan.com/new-metro-line-coming-to-noida-stations-announced-for-train-service/ https://thetimesofhindustan.com/new-metro-line-coming-to-noida-stations-announced-for-train-service/#respond Fri, 29 Dec 2023 13:14:56 +0000 https://thetimesofhindustan.com/?p=1496 New Delhi: In its recent board meeting, the Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the new Sector 142 to Botanical Garden Metro section. This project aims to establish direct connectivity to Delhi Airport (Terminal-1) through the Delhi Metro’s Magenta line.

The DPR for this route was prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) last month and subsequently handed over to the NMRC, Noida Authority, and Greater Noida Authority for approval. After thorough discussions, the proposal received the green light. The planned route covers approximately 11.56 kilometers and will feature a total of eight new metro stations.

The introduction of this new metro line is expected to improve connectivity between Noida, Greater Noida, and Delhi, benefitting commuters in the region. It will facilitate travel between the Aqua Line, Botanical Garden, and Sector 142, providing a convenient transportation option for individuals traveling between Delhi and Greater Noida.

Furthermore, the Magenta Line will offer direct connectivity to the Indira Gandhi International Airport, expanding access to New Delhi and Anand Vihar Railway Stations via the Blue Line.

Reports suggest that the project’s estimated cost is approximately Rs 22.54 billion. Once operational, this enhanced metro network will significantly enhance transportation options and facilitate smoother commuting experiences for residents and visitors in the Noida and Greater Noida areas.

As per the plan, the metro stations on the new line are expected to cover the following sectors/areas.

  • Botanical Garden
  • Noida Sector 44
  • Noida Office (Sector 96 Noida Authority Office)
  • Noida Sector 97
  • Noida Sector 105
  • Noida Sector 108
  • Noida Sector 93
  • Panchsheel Balak Inter College

Full-Body Scanners and CTX Machines to be installed at Delhi Airport by May 2024 . https://thetimesofhindustan.com/full-body-scanners-and-ctx-machines-to-be-installed-at-delhi-airport-by-may-2024/ https://thetimesofhindustan.com/full-body-scanners-and-ctx-machines-to-be-installed-at-delhi-airport-by-may-2024/#respond Sat, 16 Dec 2023 08:44:32 +0000 https://thetimesofhindustan.com/?p=1407 New Delhi: Full-body scanners, capable of detecting concealed prohibited items beneath clothing, are scheduled to be installed at Delhi Airport by May 2024. Additionally, Computed Tomography X-ray (CTX) machines, which permit passengers to retain electronic items in their hand luggage during security checks, are anticipated to be operational by the same deadline. Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) Director General Zulfiquar Hasan stated that the deadline for deploying full-body scanners at airports with over 10 million annual passengers and CTX machines at those with over 5 million passengers is currently being extended, with the previous deadline set for December 31.

During a briefing in the national capital, Hasan acknowledged certain challenges in the provisioning process and mentioned ongoing discussions with airport operators regarding the installation of the scanners.

Full-body scanners play a crucial role in identifying concealed prohibited items beneath clothing, offering an effective means of locating such objects. In contrast to the widespread use of metal detectors in airports for security screening, these scanners can detect not only metallic items but also non-metallic substances like explosives.

The latest versions of these scanners prioritize the privacy of individuals undergoing screening by not displaying detailed body images to the operator. Instead, they present a generic body outline with highlighted suspicious areas, ensuring anonymity. Upon the detection of suspicious areas, security personnel can conduct additional checks on those specific body regions using alternative methods, such as a physical pat-down search.

CTX machines, or Computer Tomography X-ray, represent a non-invasive method for visualizing internal structures within solid items, providing digital data on their 3-D shapes and characteristics. Unlike regular digital images composed of pixels, a CT slice comprises voxels, volumetric elements. The installation of CTX scanners at Delhi Airport aims to streamline and expedite the airport security screening process, as passengers will not be required to remove electronic devices from their bags during checks.

Delhi Airport, the nation’s largest, anticipates a surge in passenger traffic exceeding 70 million by the end of the fiscal year in March 2024. BCAS plans to roll out the full-body scanners gradually in different phases, addressing the evolving needs of airport security. Currently, passengers are obliged to remove electronic items and place them in separate trays during airport security checks. The introduction of advanced scanning technology is expected to enhance security measures while improving the efficiency of the screening process.
