New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday commended the tremendous success of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) as it marked its 10th anniversary. Launched in 2014, the Jan Dhan Yojana has been a transformative initiative, driving financial inclusion across India and making essential banking services accessible to millions, especially those in marginalized communities.

In his address, PM Modi expressed deep appreciation for everyone involved in the scheme’s success, from the beneficiaries to the implementers. He highlighted the far-reaching impact of the scheme, stating, “Today, we mark a momentous occasion – #10YearsOfJanDhan. Congratulations to all the beneficiaries and compliments to all those who worked to make this scheme a success.”

The PMJDY was introduced as a cornerstone of the government’s broader strategy to ensure that every Indian household has access to vital financial services such as banking, credit, insurance, and pensions. Over the past decade, the scheme has significantly expanded the reach of the formal financial system, bringing millions of unbanked individuals into its fold.

One of the key achievements of the Jan Dhan Yojana has been its role in empowering women, youth, and other marginalized sections of society. By providing access to savings accounts, debit cards, and direct benefit transfers, the scheme has not only enhanced financial security but also restored dignity and independence to those who were previously excluded from the financial system.

The success of the Jan Dhan Yojana is evident in the dramatic increase in bank account ownership across the country, with millions of new accounts opened under the scheme. As it enters its second decade, the PMJDY continues to play a crucial role in India’s ongoing journey towards greater financial inclusion and economic empowerment, ensuring that the benefits of financial services reach every corner of the nation.

New Delhi: In Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district, a case has been registered by the police against the contractor and structural consultant involved in the construction of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue, which collapsed unexpectedly on Monday. The incident, which took place at around 1 pm, involved a 35-foot statue that was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Navy Day last year at Rajkot Fort in Malvan tehsil. New In Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district, a case has been registered by the police against the contractor and structural consultant involved in the construction of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue, which collapsed unexpectedly on Monday. The incident, which took place at around 1 pm, involved a 35-foot statue that was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Navy Day last year at Rajkot Fort in Malvan tehsil. The statue, a significant symbol of regional pride, was dedicated to the 17th-century Maratha warrior king, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The unexpected collapse of the statue has led to widespread embarrassment for the Maharashtra government, headed by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties. In response to the incident, Chief Minister Shinde addressed the public, clarifying that the statue was designed and constructed by the Indian Navy, thereby distancing his administration from the technical aspects of the project.

Despite this clarification, the incident has raised serious concerns about the quality of construction and the accountability of those involved in such a high-profile project. The FIR filed against the contractor and structural consultant marks the beginning of a legal investigation into the incident, with authorities seeking to determine the causes behind the collapse.

The collapse has prompted calls for a comprehensive review of the construction processes, including the roles of various stakeholders and the oversight and safety standards that were followed during the project. As the investigation unfolds, the case is expected to draw significant attention, with the public eager to see who will be held responsible for the failure of a monument dedicated to one of India’s most revered historical figures.

Nationwide Bharat Bandh Today Dalit and Adivasi Groups Announces https://thetimesofhindustan.com/dalit-and-adivasi-groups-announce-nationwide-bharat-bandh-today/ https://thetimesofhindustan.com/dalit-and-adivasi-groups-announce-nationwide-bharat-bandh-today/#respond Wed, 21 Aug 2024 06:56:26 +0000 https://thetimesofhindustan.com/?p=5054

New Delhi: A nationwide Bharat Bandh on Wednesday have announced by Dalit and Adivasi organizations to press for increased representation of marginalized communities in employment and education and to safeguard their constitutional rights. This peaceful strike is a response to a recent Supreme Court decision regarding the sub-categorization of quotas for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) and concerns over lateral entry into central civil services.

The Supreme Court’s ruling, delivered on August 1 by a seven-judge bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, permits states to further sub-classify SCs and STs to ensure that more backward castes within these groups receive quota benefits. This verdict has raised alarms within Dalit and Adivasi communities, who argue that it could undermine the foundational principles established by the Indira Sawhney case, which set the framework for the reservation system in India.

In response, the National Confederation of Dalit and Adivasi Organisations (NACDAOR), which spearheaded the Bharat Bandh, has put forward several demands. Among these are calls for the government to reject the Supreme Court’s judgment and introduce a new central act, shielded from judicial review by the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution. NACDAOR also demands the prompt release of caste-based data on SC/ST/OBC employees in government services to ensure fair representation and the filling of all backlog vacancies in central and state government departments.

Support for the Bharat Bandh has come from various political parties, including the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Congress, and the Rashtriya Janata Dal, along with leftist parties. While the bandh is expected to disrupt public services in states governed by these parties, essential services such as hospitals and emergency facilities will remain operational.

NACDAOR has urged all OBC, SC, and ST groups to participate peacefully and in large numbers, highlighting the need for unity in the ongoing struggle for social justice and equitable representation.

This observance, established by the Modi government in 2021, serves as a solemn reflection on one of the most traumatic chapters in India’s history—the division of the country under British colonial rule, which led to the creation of Pakistan. In a message shared on X, PM Modi highlighted the profound and lasting impact of the partition on the Indian subcontinent. It is also a day to pay tributes to their courage, which illustrates the power of human resilience.” The Prime Minister underscored the incredible strength and determination shown by those who survived the partition, many of whom went on to rebuild their lives and achieve significant success despite the immense challenges they faced.

Emphasizing the importance of national unity, PM Modi reiterated India’s commitment to preserving the bonds of brotherhood that bind the nation together. His message was a call to remember the past while striving to ensure such divisions never happen again.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also marked the occasion, paying homage to those who suffered during the partition. He described the partition as one of the most painful episodes in India’s history, stressing that remembering it is essential for the nation’s future. “On Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, my homage to the millions who suffered inhumane pains, lost lives, and turned homeless during this most hideous episode of our history,” Shah wrote on X. He added that observing this day is a critical step in the process of nation-building under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership.

Partition Horrors Remembrance Day not only honors the victims but also serves as a testament to the resilience and strength of the human spirit. It reminds the nation of the importance of unity, brotherhood, and the need to learn from the past to build a stronger future.
