Tamil Nadu Hooch Tragedy: 34 Dead After Consuming Illicit Liquor in Kallakurichi District

New Delhi – In a tragic incident, 34 people have died after consuming illicit alcohol in Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi district. Over 60 individuals are currently hospitalized, many in critical condition, following the consumption of the toxic substance. Police have arrested K Kannukutti, 49, in connection with the incident. Authorities have seized 200 liters of illicit liquor and initiated a thorough investigation to determine the presence of deadly methanol in the seized batch, suspected to be the cause of the poisonings.

More than 20 individuals, experiencing symptoms such as vomiting and stomach pain, were admitted to Kallakurichi Medical College Hospital on June 19. A district official reported that 109 people are receiving treatment in various hospitals. The status of those critically ill is continually monitored, with updates expected as their conditions change. State Minister EV Velu mentioned that two women and one transgender person were among the deceased. Medical professionals from nearby government medical colleges have been deployed, and additional ambulances equipped with life-support systems are stationed in the district to assist the affected.

Senior Minister EV Velu emphasized that the government is taking stern actions against the production and sale of illicit liquor. The administration has pledged to continue enforcing strict measures, including utilizing the Goondas Act, to prevent such incidents. Velu, along with Health Minister Ma Subramanian, is present in Kallakurichi to provide support to the victims and their families. Actor-politician Vijay criticized the government’s negligence and urged for stringent precautionary measures to avert future tragedies. The Tamil Nadu hooch tragedy highlights the dangers of consuming unregulated alcohol and underscores the need for strict enforcement against illicit liquor production.
