New Delhi: Australian cricket star Marnus Labuschagne has officially retired the bat he used during the dramatic ODI World Cup 2023 final. On August 12, Labuschagne posted a photo of the well-worn bat on Instagram, revealing its battered condition and announcing his decision to retire it.

Labuschagne played a crucial role in Australia’s World Cup triumph over India, held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. With Australia in a precarious position at 47/3, Labuschagne’s composed innings of 58 off 110 balls was instrumental in stabilizing the team. His performance at a critical juncture helped set up a pivotal partnership with Travis Head.

Head’s explosive innings of 137 runs off 120 balls, featuring 15 fours and 4 sixes, was a perfect complement to Labuschagne’s more restrained knock. Together, they forged a match-winning 192-run stand that dismantled the Indian bowling attack, leading Australia to chase down the target of 241 in just 43 overs. This remarkable partnership secured Australia’s six-wicket victory and their sixth ODI World Cup title.

Throughout the tournament, Labuschagne accumulated 362 runs in ten innings, averaging 40.22 with a strike rate of 70.70. His highest score of 71 runs off 83 balls came against England, showcasing his consistent performance throughout the competition.

Labuschagne’s retirement of the bat marks the end of a significant chapter in his career, commemorating his key role in one of cricket’s most memorable finals.
