Ammonia Gas Leak in Pune District Food Plant Leaves 17 Hospitalized
New Delhi: On Wednesday, 17 workers, including 15 women, were hospitalized after an ammonia gas leak at a food processing company in Bhandgaon, Pune district. The leak occurred from a cooling unit in a ready-to-eat food preparation facility located about 60 km from Pune.
Officials reported that the ammonia leak led to symptoms of ammonia poisoning among the staff, who were swiftly admitted to a nearby hospital. As of Thursday morning, one person remains in the ICU but is said to be stable, while the other sixteen workers are recovering and out of danger.
Police Inspector Narayan Deshmukh from the Yavat police station, under Pune rural jurisdiction, provided an update on the situation. “The ammonia leak from the cooling unit on Wednesday morning resulted in 17 staffers showing signs of ammonia poisoning. They were promptly hospitalized. An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the leak,” Deshmukh stated.
The food processing company, known for its ready-to-eat meals, is actively collaborating with authorities to manage the incident and prevent future incidents. This event highlights the critical need for rigorous safety measures in industrial environments to safeguard workers from hazardous substances.
