Assam

New Delhi: The flood situation in Assam has worsened significantly, affecting approximately 16.50 lakh people across 29 districts. Major rivers like the Brahmaputra, Digaru, and Kollong are flowing above the danger level, inundating large areas and posing substantial challenges to relief efforts. Responding swiftly, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has scheduled visits to the worst-hit areas in the Guwahati Metropolitan region, including Maligaon, Pandu Port, and Temple Ghat. His objective is to assess the ground situation and expedite relief measures for those in need.

In a late-night meeting with District Commissioners, Sarma emphasized the need to enhance relief distribution while adhering to established norms. He directed officials to expedite the processing of rehabilitation claims before August 15 and stressed the importance of accurate reporting to headquarters for efficient relief distribution.

The floods have claimed 56 lives so far, with three others reported missing, underscoring the urgency of the situation. Cabinet ministers will camp in flood-affected districts over the next three days, demonstrating the government’s commitment to providing immediate relief and support. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) continues to closely monitor the situation, coordinating rescue and relief operations to minimize further loss of life and property.
