Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Vedanta’s BALCO Medical Centre Champions Early Detection and Fosters Stigma-Free Dialogue
New Delhi: As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Vedanta’s BALCO Medical Centre (BMC), one of India’s prominent cancer care institutions, has unveiled a powerful campaign, “Sharm Chodho, Gaantho Pe Bolo” (Let Go of Shame, Speak Up About Lumps). This initiative aims to promote proactive breast health measures and dismantle the stigma surrounding breast cancer, with a focus on early detection through screenings, outreach, and educational programs.
Campaign to Drive Awareness and Accessibility
The campaign, anchored by the slogan “Sharm Chodho, Gaantho Pe Bolo,” is designed to spark open, stigma-free conversations about breast health across communities. BMC rolled out free digital mammography screenings, held outreach activities, and engaged in educational podcast sessions to highlight the importance of early detection. The initiative seeks to educate the public about the disease and encourage women to take proactive steps for prevention and timely intervention.
To make screenings more accessible, the BALCO Medical Centre organized health camps throughout October, particularly focusing on women over the age of 45. In the final week of the month, BMC’s Mobile Cancer Detection Van set up camps in neighboring villages, bringing critical health screening services directly to underserved communities. Attendees received valuable guidance on self-breast examination and learned about the importance of regular check-ups, thereby empowering them to take control of their breast health.
Community Involvement and Symbolic Events
In addition to medical services, BMC arranged a Breast Cancer Awareness Bike Rally, which brought together participants from 10 biking groups and over 270 riders. This rally, symbolizing unity in the fight against breast cancer, concluded with a tree plantation drive to signify hope and growth. Such community activities reinforce the importance of early detection and proactive health practices while building a supportive environment for women facing breast cancer.
Furthermore, BMC shared campaign updates on social media, including highlights from the rally, educational carousels, and expert-led videos to reach a wider audience. These efforts underscore BMC’s dedication to creating an informed community that understands the critical nature of early breast cancer detection.
Expert Insights and Empowering Conversations
Dr. Bhawna Sirohi, Medical Director of BMC, emphasized the importance of fostering open conversations about breast health. “Breast Cancer Awareness Month is crucial for promoting monitoring, timely interventions, and dialogues around breast health. With ‘Sharm Chodho, Gaantho Pe Bolo,’ we aim to break the silence around breast health, empowering women to recognize early signs and take action without hesitation,” said Dr. Sirohi. “By fostering open discussions and accessible screenings, we aim to improve health outcomes and make early detection more common.”
Dr. Sirohi further extended her outreach efforts by appearing on a podcast, discussing breast cancer awareness and stressing the significance of routine screening. She also led a townhall event with BMC employees, who dressed in pink to showcase solidarity and discussed their roles in supporting patients and their families. The discussions revolved around ways to support patient awareness and care, highlighting BMC’s commitment to holistic care that goes beyond the walls of the hospital.
BALCO Medical Centre: Leading Cancer Care in India
Since its inception in 2018, Vedanta Aluminium’s BALCO Medical Centre has become a leader in India’s cancer care sector, setting new standards in oncological services. With breast cancer being the most diagnosed cancer worldwide, accounting for approximately 2.3 million cases each year, BMC’s initiatives are essential in combating this global health challenge. The health camps and awareness drives demonstrate BMC’s commitment to accessible cancer care, offering vital screenings and education to employees and rural women alike.
