Earthquake tremors in Japan: 155 earthquakes shook the country, Prime Minister confirmed ‘many casualties’
New Delhi: In the seismic onslaught, Japan has experienced a staggering 155 earthquakes, including a powerful 7.6 magnitude quake that generated a tsunami more than a meter high. This devastating event has left a trail of destruction, with collapsed buildings, burnt houses and massive fires wreaking havoc.
The Japan Meteorological Office reported a series of earthquakes, the largest of which triggered tsunami waves that damaged homes and sparked inferno overnight. At least six deaths have been confirmed, and authorities are working hard to rescue victims from the debris of collapsed structures.
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, addressing the media, described widespread damage and numerous casualties and described the situation as a “race against time” for rescue operations. While the tsunami warning has been lifted, Kishida stressed the government’s commitment to establishing sea routes to reach isolated areas.
As search and rescue operations begin, approximately 100 members of the Self-Defense Forces are actively engaged in the affected areas. The fallout included more than 32,000 homes without power, closed highways and suspended bullet train services.
US President Joe Biden offered assistance in the wake of the disaster, saying “the United States and Japan share a deep bond of friendship.” The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned residents about possible earthquakes in the coming week, raising concerns in the quake-hit country.
