Empowering Student Innovation and Sustainability at AWS Think Big Science Carnival
Mumbai: AWS Think Big Science Carnival 2024, organized by Amazon Web Services (AWS) with support from Learning Links Foundation, came up with a range of innovative projects, reflecting the spirit of sustainability.
On March 22, 2024, students from municipally run schools in Navi Mumbai and Thane enthralled the audience with 25 unique projects at the fifth annual AWS Think Big Science Carnival. The projects displayed included a portable baby feeding chamber, an assistive robot for medical professionals, a child rescue system for open borewells, a mapping service for shopping complexes and eco-friendly (maize) plates.
This carnival is a flagship initiative under the AWS Think Big Space program, which aims to empower students from underprivileged communities to develop skills in STEAM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) and prepare them for future careers in science. Kalpana Gosavi, Education Extension Officer at Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) appreciated the creativity of the students and lauded AWS for inspiring young minds towards science and technology. He expressed gratitude for AWS’s dedication to empowering youth for a brighter future.
The main theme of this year’s carnival was sustainability in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The projects were categorized under ‘Eco Warriors’ and ‘Sustainable Cities’. Over 2000 students from 56 schools participated in the event, which emphasized sustainability through initiatives like the Climate Pledge.
In addition to showcasing their projects, students had the opportunity to learn about emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and Cloud Computing from AWS experts. They also experienced interactive technologies such as Amazon Echo (Alexa) and Augmented Reality.
The AWS Think Big Space program aims to provide a dedicated space for students to explore STEAM subjects. Implemented in 50 NMMC schools and six Thane Municipal Corporation schools since 2019, it has benefited over 13,000 students.
Students who have participated in the AWS Think Big Science Carnival have achieved success in various state, national, and international competitions, demonstrating the program’s impact in nurturing future innovators.
