New EV to be AMG’s first bespoke SUV

New Delhi: Mercedes-Benz’s high-performance AMG division is currently developing a groundbreaking flagship SUV based on its bespoke electric car platform . Expected to debut in 2026, this new super-SUV aims to compete directly with premium rivals like the BMW XM, Lotus Eletre, and Porsche’s upcoming K1.

Unlike other Mercedes-Benz models, this SUV is entirely engineered by Mercedes-AMG, boasting unique styling and interior design akin to the GT Coupe and GT 4-Door Coupe. Positioned as the successor to the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63, it will showcase its distinct identity with an upcoming concept previewing its innovative design.

This flagship SUV will measure around 5,100mm in length, with a wheelbase exceeding 3,000mm for ample interior space. Key features include an 800V electric system, specialized axial flux motors, and a custom AMG.OS operating system dubbed AMG.OS. It will leverage the new AMG.EA platform, shared with the GT 4-Door Coupe, and employ advanced electric motors from Yasa, offering exceptional power density.

Markus Schäfer, Mercedes-Benz’s technology chief, lauds the AMG.EA platform’s technological prowess, particularly its axial flux motor technology and high-performance battery setup. The SUV will boast over 1,000hp potential, aided by sophisticated torque vectoring and four-wheel-drive capabilities.

Production is slated alongside the GT 4-Door Coupe at Mercedes-Benz’s Sindelfingen plant, with preparations underway for these flagship AMG models. This endeavor underscores AMG’s commitment to expanding its electric performance lineup, following with an electric version of the CLA and related performance variants of compact models in the future.
