New Delhi: The Maharashtra Government is charting a new course in its tourism and hospitality sectors with an ambitious initiative to promote river cruising. At the forefront of this effort is the launch of several river cruise routes, designed to harness the potential of the state’s extensive river network. One of the standout offerings is the Nandurbar-Statue of Unity cruise, which is set to become a major attraction for both domestic and international travelers. Additionally, the picturesque Vashishti River in Konkan and the Godavari River in Nashik are being developed as prime destinations for cruise tourism.

To support this burgeoning industry, Maharashtra plans to construct new ports along the Konkan coast, enhancing the infrastructure needed for a thriving river cruise sector. The state government has pledged INR 1,666 crore in incentives for this fiscal year, with similar commitments expected over the next decade. This financial strategy aims to attract INR 1 lakh crore in investments, potentially generating up to 18 lakh direct and indirect jobs over the next ten years, thereby significantly boosting the local economy.

Maharashtra’s new tourism policy is positioning the state as a leading destination for river cruising, a niche segment within the broader cruise industry. Unlike sea cruises, river cruises have the advantage of operating year-round, providing consistent tourism opportunities without being hampered by seasonal weather conditions. The state’s diverse river system—including the Narmada, Vashishti, Godavari, Savitri, Krishna, and Tapi rivers—offers travelers an unparalleled combination of natural beauty and cultural heritage.

To encourage investment, the government is offering a range of incentives, including capital investment subsidies of 15-20% or up to INR 20 crore, whichever is less. Additional incentives include exemptions on SGST, electricity duty, tariffs, and stamp duty, depending on the project’s eligibility period, which can range from 5 to 15 years.

This policy is not just about boosting tourism; it also seeks to provide travelers with an authentic experience of Maharashtrian hospitality. River cruises will offer opportunities to explore traditional villages, historical sites, and sample regional cuisine and arts. Moreover, these cruises will promote ecotourism, allowing visitors to engage in activities like bird watching, nature walks, and visits to wildlife sanctuaries along the riverbanks.
