FASTag Annual Pass: What It Is, Who Benefits & Why Cabs/Taxis Can’t Avail It

India’s persistent toll plaza congestion and repetitive toll payments are set to get a remedy through a new initiative—the FASTag Annual Pass. Announced by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on 18 June 2025, this scheme is designed to simplify and reduce the cost of highway travel for private vehicle owners .

What Is the FASTag Annual Pass?

This is a prepaid annual subscription linked to your existing FASTag. For a flat fee of ₹3,000, you can travel on all NHAI-operated national highways and expressways for up to one year or 200 toll crossings, whichever comes first .

Who Can Use It?

Only private, non-commercial vehicles—like cars, jeeps, and vans—are eligible. This pass is not available for commercial vehicles such as taxis (Ola, Uber), trucks, buses, or cabs.

Launch Date

The FASTag Annual Pass becomes available from 15 August 2025, coinciding with Independence Day .

How to Activate

There’s no need for a new device—use your existing FASTag. Activation can be done via:

The NHAI or Ministry of Road Transport (MoRTH) websites

You’ll need your vehicle registration and FASTag ID. Once activated, you’ll receive a confirmation via SMS .

Validity & Usage Rules

The pass is valid for:

200 toll crossings on NHAI highways and expressways, or
One year from activation date

Trips are counted differently depending on the toll system:

Open-system tolls: each toll plaza crossed = 1 trip (round-trip = 2)
Closed-system highways: entry + exit across any tolled road = 1 trip

Once 200 trips are used or the year ends, your FASTag will revert to regular per-trip toll mode. You can then renew the pass again at ₹3,000 .

Where Is It Applicable?

The pass is valid only at toll plazas managed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). It does not apply to toll plazas on state highways, private roads, or state-run expressways (like the Ganga Expressway or Mumbai–Pune Expressway) .

Can the Pass Be Transferred?

No. The pass is non-transferable and tied to a single FASTag/vehicle. If you sell your car, the new owner must purchase a fresh pass .

What About Cabs and Taxis?

As of now, commercial vehicles like taxis and cabs are not eligible for the annual pass. These vehicles must continue paying tolls per trip using the standard FASTag. Government reviews may occur in the future, but for now, no exemptions are planned .
