Force Gurkha 4×2: The New Rival to Mahindra Thar RWD

Force Gurkha 4x2

New Delhi: Force Motors is gearing up to introduce a 4×2 variant of its popular 3-door Gurkha SUV, aiming to provide a more affordable entry point into its lineup. This move is seen as a strategic attempt to compete directly with the Mahindra Thar RWD, which has gained significant popularity.

The 4×2 Gurkha is expected to retain the rugged appeal of its 4×4 counterpart but without the off-roading hardware, making it a more practical choice for urban drivers. Here’s what to expect:

  • Body Style: The 4×2 variant will come in the same 3-door configuration as the current model.
  • Engine: It will be powered by the existing 140hp, 2.6-litre diesel engine.
  • Transmission: A 5-speed manual gearbox will be standard.
  • Pricing: Expected to be more affordable, with a likely starting price around Rs 15 lakh, compared to the 3-door Gurkha’s current price of Rs 16.75 lakh (ex-showroom).

The decision to develop a 4×2 variant is influenced by the success of Mahindra’s strategy with the Thar. Nearly 50% of Thar’s sales now come from its RWD variants, primarily driven by urban users who don’t require the full 4×4 capabilities. By offering a 4×2 version, Force Motors aims to attract a broader audience who might be looking for the Gurkha’s iconic style and presence but at a more accessible price point.

The Gurkha 4×2 will compete directly with the Mahindra Thar RWD, which is priced between Rs 11.35 lakh and Rs 14.10 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). While the Gurkha won’t benefit from tax concessions (due to its engine size exceeding the sub-1.5-litre limit), it will offer a unique proposition with its robust 2.6-litre engine and distinctive styling.

The new 4×2 Gurkha will likely retain most of the features from the current model, minus the off-roading gear such as the manual transfer case and differential locks. It will continue to be a four-seater with forward-facing rear seats, catering to families and urban adventurers.

Force Motors’ upcoming 4×2 Gurkha is poised to broaden the appeal of this iconic SUV. By making it more affordable and practical for everyday use, the company hopes to capture a larger market share and provide a compelling alternative to the Mahindra Thar RWD. Keep an eye out for its launch, as it promises to shake up the SUV segment with its unique blend of style and practicality.
