Goa CM Flags Airline Relocation from Dabolim Airport as a Major Concern to Centre
New Delhi: Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has voiced his government’s growing concerns to the Centre regarding the gradual shift of airline operations from Dabolim International Airport to the newly inaugurated Mopa Airport in Pernem taluka. Since Mopa Airport became operational early last year, several airlines have redirected their flights, resulting in a noticeable decline in activity at Dabolim Airport, which has historically served as Goa’s primary aviation gateway.
During a recent meeting with Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu in New Delhi, Chief Minister Sawant highlighted the potential repercussions of this shift on Goa’s economy and connectivity. Accompanied by key members of his cabinet, including Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho and Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte, Sawant stressed the importance of maintaining robust operations at both airports. The discussions also included Murlidhar Mohol, the junior civil aviation minister, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
An official statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) revealed that Sawant and his delegation urged the central government to implement measures that would ensure Dabolim Airport remains a vital hub for both domestic and international flights. The concern is that the diminishing number of flights at Dabolim could negatively impact tourism and business travel—sectors that are crucial to Goa’s economic health.
Sawant’s administration is advocating for a balanced approach that would allow both Dabolim and Mopa airports to function effectively. This, they believe, is essential for preserving Goa’s connectivity, supporting its tourism industry, and sustaining overall economic stability. The Chief Minister’s appeal to the Centre reflects the state’s commitment to maintaining its status as a premier travel destination while adapting to the evolving aviation landscape.
