Healthcare Workers in Andamans Demand Justice for Raped and Murdered Kolkata’s Doctor
New Delhi: The healthcare Workers in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands staged a powerful 24-hour strike on Saturday, in response to the tragic rape and murder of a doctor at a Kolkata hospital. This protest, led by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), saw the participation of over 2,000 healthcare workers, including doctors, nurses, technicians, and medical students, who collectively voiced their outrage over the heinous crime.
The strike, which has caused significant disruptions to healthcare services across the islands, was initiated as a means to express solidarity with the victim and to demand justice. Dr. R Thulasi Dasan, president of the IMA’s Andaman and Nicobar chapter, highlighted the deep sorrow and anger felt by the medical community, stating, “We strongly condemn the incident that occurred in Kolkata. The entire healthcare community is mourning the loss of a colleague under such horrific circumstances.”
Despite the strike, essential medical services, particularly emergency care, continued to operate to ensure that patients in critical need were not affected. Dr. Dasan reassured the public that regular medical services would resume the following day, but emphasized the importance of the protest in drawing attention to the risks faced by healthcare professionals.
The IMA and other related organizations are using this strike not only to seek justice for the victim but also to advocate for better safety measures for those in the medical field. The incident has underscored the urgent need for systemic changes to protect healthcare workers from violence and ensure their safety while on duty.
