Hyundai Introduces Electric Air Taxi at CES 2024
New Delhi: Hyundai Motor Group has revealed its latest electric air taxi model, the S-A2, at the renowned CES 2024 tech show. This groundbreaking development marks a significant milestone in urban transportation, particularly as global traffic challenges continue to escalate. With a firm focus on electric aviation technology, Hyundai aims to establish a strong presence in the expanding world of electric flying taxis.
Presented by Hyundai’s US-based air taxi unit, Supernal, the S-A2 prototype offers an Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (EVTOL) design. By combining Supernal’s innovative aerospace engineering expertise with Hyundai Motor Group’s distinctive automotive aesthetic, the S-A2 promises to revolutionize transportation in urban areas. It is reported that Supernal is committed to achieving commercial aviation safety standards while ensuring cost-effective manufacturing, with plans to launch the S-A2 in 2028.
The S-A2 boasts a V-tail aircraft configuration, designed to meet the common transportation needs of urban environments. With a maximum altitude of 1,500 feet and a cruising speed of 120 mph, the air taxi’s capabilities are tailored to efficiently navigate congested urban airspace. The vehicle incorporates a distributed electric propulsion system, featuring eight all-tilting rotors. This advanced technology facilitates seamless transitions between vertical-lift and horizontal-cruise phases of flight, prioritizing efficiency and performance, according to Hyundai.
Supernal’s engineering teams collaborated closely with Hyundai Motor Group’s automotive designers to ensure a harmonious blend of design and functionality in the S-A2. Shin Jae-won, Head of Advanced Air Mobility for the Group and Supernal’s CEO, expressed their strategic vision, stating that Supernal has been diligently working to introduce the right product to the market at the opportune moment.
