Ineos Fusilier Electric SUV Unveiled
New Delhi: Ineos has unveiled the Fusilier, pitching it as a smaller counterpart to the Grenadier with the option of pure-electric power and “world-class off-road capability”. This is the company’s third model after the Grenadier SUV and Quartermaster pick-up.
Design and Interior
While both the electric and range-extender (REX) versions will share the same appearance, the Fusilier maintains a distinct visual relationship with the Grenadier. Its design emphasizes aerodynamic efficiency, featuring rounded edges and corners, flush windows, recessed door hinges and active grille shutters at the front.
Internal details have not yet been revealed, but Ineos has confirmed the presence of physical buttons and switches found in the Grenadier.
Battery, range and powertrain
The electric variant is targeted to achieve a range of 400 km, while the REX version will use around 70 per cent of the EV’s battery capacity, offering an estimated range of around 270 km with the engine off. Samsung will supply the batteries, which will be assembled in Hungary, although the specific chemistry has not yet been determined.
Both variants will feature an electric motor at each end for four-wheel drive capability, engineered to excel in challenging terrains. The Fusilier will opt for a different steering system than the Grenadier, aimed at improving on-road behaviour.
Founder and chairman Sir Jim Ratcliffe said Ineos is introducing the REX powertrain to address the limitations of battery-electric vehicles in some scenarios. The petrol engine, details of which have not yet been disclosed, will serve as a generator to power the electric motors, with Ineos estimating significantly lower CO2 emissions than conventional ICE models.
Production and rivals
The decision to offer the REX option prompted Ineos to postpone the launch of Fusilier from 2026 to early 2027. Development and engineering will be handled by Magna, with durability testing planned at Shokal Pass, known for its rigorous testing of various G-Class iterations.
Rivals like Land Rover Defender, Toyota Land Cruiser and Mercedes G-Class are also expected to introduce compact electric derivatives soon, further intensifying competition in the segment.
