Isuzu Unveils D-Max EV Concept

New Delhi: Isuzu recently took the wraps off its first electric vehicle concept, the D-Max EV, signaling its entry into the fast-growing electric pickup truck segment. The D-Max EV concept serves as a preview of Isuzu’s future electric offerings and is set to compete with the upcoming electric version of the Toyota Hilux.

Planned to be introduced in European markets such as Norway and the UK in 2025, followed by Australia and Thailand, the production-specific D-Max BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) is set to make its global debut in Bangkok on the 45th. International Motor Show from 27 March to 7 April.

The D-Max EV has a strong powertrain, consisting of a 66.9 kWh battery pack with a dual-motor setup. This configuration enables the electric pickup to deliver an impressive output of 176 horsepower and 325 Nm of torque. Notably, the electric variant is ahead of its diesel-powered counterpart by about 14 horsepower. Additionally, the dual motors feature full-time four-wheel drive capability, increasing the vehicle’s off-road capability and versatility.

Although Isuzu has not revealed specific details about the range, the D-Max EV is expected to offer competitive mileage on a single charge. Comparable electric vehicles in the market, such as BYD Sealed Dynamic and Hyundai’s Ioniq 5, boast battery packs ranging from 61.44 kWh to 72.6 kWh, providing impressive ranges of up to 631 kilometers (ARAI) and 510 kilometers (NEDC) respectively. Are.

Apart from its performance capabilities, the D-Max EV retains the practicality and utility expected from a pickup truck. With a payload capacity of 1 tonne and towing capacity of 3.5 tonne, the electric variant is ready to serve as a versatile and efficient commercial vehicle, catering to a wide range of applications.

In the Indian market, Isuzu currently offers the D-Max in two variants: the entry-level Hi-Lander and the upscale D-Max V-Cross, both powered by a 163 horsepower 1.9-litre diesel engine. Positioned as a competitor to the Toyota Hilux, which is priced between Rs 30.40 lakh and Rs 37.90 lakh in India, the D-Max EV is expected to offer an attractive alternative in the electric pickup segment.

Isuzu’s rival in the pickup truck segment, Toyota, has also showcased its electric counterpart for the Hilux, signaling the industry’s shift towards electrification. Although specific details about the electric Hilux have not been revealed yet, it is speculated that the vehicle will leverage the same electric technologies shared with other models built on the IMV platform such as the Innova Crysta and the Fortuner.

With the unveiling of the D-Max EV Concept, Isuzu is set to make significant strides in the electric vehicle market, providing customers with an eco-friendly and efficient option in the pickup truck segment. As the automotive industry continues to embrace electrification, Isuzu’s entry into electric vehicles reflects its commitment to innovation and sustainability, setting the stage for a greener and more sustainable future on the roads.
