Kathmandu Plane Crash Claims 18 Lives; Only Pilot Survives
New Delhi: On July 24, a tragic plane crash at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, Nepal, resulted in the death of 18 individuals. The Saurya Airlines aircraft, destined for Pokhara, crashed during its takeoff, leaving only the pilot as the survivor.
The accident occurred as the plane was attempting to take off from the airport serving Nepal’s capital. Witnesses reported that the aircraft veered off the runway and crashed into the ground. Emergency services, including firefighters and rescue teams, were promptly dispatched to the scene. Thick black smoke was seen rising into the sky as crews worked to extinguish the flames and recover the wreckage. The airport has been temporarily closed due to the crash, causing significant disruptions to both domestic and international flights.
The sole survivor, the pilot, was transported to Kathmandu Medical College Hospital for medical attention. Medical staff, who requested anonymity, confirmed that the pilot is in stable condition. The ill-fated flight had 19 people on board, including two pilots and 17 passengers. The passenger list included one foreign national, whose identity and nationality have not yet been disclosed. The rest of the passengers were Nepali nationals.
The crash happened amid challenging weather conditions. Although there was no rain at the time, visibility was reported to be poor. The airport, located in a valley surrounded by mountainous terrain, is known for its difficult flight procedures, which likely added to the challenges faced by the pilots.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the crash. Meanwhile, efforts are being focused on supporting the victims’ families and managing the extensive disruptions caused by the airport closure.
