Last Ever Audi R8 Supercar Rolls Off Production Line

Audi R8 Supercar

New Delhi: Audi has officially ended production of its iconic R8 supercar, with the final model recently rolling off the assembly line at Audi’s plant in Germany. The final R8 in V10 Performance Quattro spec had attractive Vegas Yellow paint with bronze wheels and was a coupe equipped with a carbon fiber styling package.

This particular R8 is destined for a life of quiet appreciation as it will reportedly find its place in a museum. Audi had announced its intention to phase out the R8 in October 2022, but the announcement led to an increase in orders for the last few R8s. As a result, Audi extended production by a few more months to meet demand.

Audi R8 Legacy

The R8, which was initially showcased as the Le Mans quattro concept at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show, was converted into a production model three years later. Serving as Audi’s high-performance flagship, it celebrated Audi’s consecutive victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race in 2000, 2001 and 2002. Additionally, the R8 gained further fame through its appearance in the original Iron Man film.

The second-generation R8 made its debut at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. The departure of the R8 is significant because of the rarity of its engine – an atmospheric 5.2-litre, naturally aspirated V10. Currently, the R8 is one of only two cars on the market equipped with a V10 engine, its sibling, the Lamborghini Huracan, being the other. Although Audi offered both the first and second generations of the R8 supercar for a limited period in India, the R8 facelift did not make its way to the Indian market.

Audi R8 to get all-electric successor

As previously reported, Audi intends to replace the R8 with a radically redesigned electric supercar to crown its new-era lineup of sports cars. The electric vehicle (EV) is expected to arrive in the middle of the decade, and although specifics are scarce, it will stay true to the fundamental concept of the R8. Expect a sleek two-door silhouette, more power than any other Audi, and a substantial price. However, it remains uncertain whether Audi will retain the ‘R8’ moniker for the electric successor.
