Mahindra Gears Up for Thar 5-Door Production Starting June 2024
New Delhi: Anticipation has run high as Mahindra is setting the stage for launching the much-awaited Thar 5-door in the second half of this year. After a year of extensive testing at various locations, the automaker aims to begin series production around June, with plans to manufacture around 4,000 units per month.
Built on the same production line as its 3-door counterpart, the Thar 5-door, rumored to be nicknamed Thar Armada, promises to improve the Thar experience with advanced features and capabilities. Despite the substantial order backlog for the 3-door version, sources indicate that production of the 5-door model will not disrupt ongoing manufacturing.
The spy shots from South India reveal the nearness of production of the SUV, which showcases unique design elements. The Thar 5-door features a distinctive front bumper and grille, subtly revised rear bumper and reprofiled tail lamps. A refreshed alloy wheel design, which likely varies across variants, adds to the aesthetic appeal of the SUV.
Internally, the Thar 5-door integrates a 10.25-inch touchscreen, first introduced in the updated XUV400, with possible over-the-air (OTA) updates. Minor changes have been made to the dashboard to accommodate the larger infotainment screen. The spy photos highlight the consistent switchgear of the current Thar, while the steering wheel resembles the XUV700. Notably, the Thar 5-door, also called the Thar Armada, offers armrests for the front and rear passengers, complemented by dedicated grab handles for the second row. Higher variants will feature an added luxury – an impressive sunroof.
Powering the Thar 5-door is expected to come with the familiar 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre petrol engines, mated to 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions. The off-road capabilities and hardware synonymous with the Thar lineup will remain, with suspension adjustments tailored to each powertrain.
As Mahindra prepares for the production kick-off, the Thar 5-door emerges as a promising addition to the acclaimed Thar series, which aims to redefine the off-road experience for enthusiasts and adventurers.
