New Delhi: The much-awaited launch of Maruti Suzuki’s EVX SUV has been delayed by several months as the brand faces several challenges related to battery supply and software development. According to reports from Autocar Professional, the start of production (SOP) has been pushed back by at least five months as Maruti attempts to clear these hurdles.
Delayed Launch Impacts Production and Export Plans
Originally scheduled for September 2024, the start of production for the Maruti EVX SUV is now expected to be postponed to February 2025 at the earliest. As a result, plans to export vehicles to Europe and Japan have also been postponed from late 2024 to next year. The delay has also hit Suzuki, which is counting on the EVX to enter Europe’s competitive EV market. Maruti Suzuki intends to allocate a significant portion – around 75-80 per cent – of the planned 150,000 units to overseas markets.
Software Challenges in EV Development
Given the complex nature and advanced features of electric powertrains, this setback underscores the complexities associated with software development in electric vehicles. Maruti Suzuki aims to ensure a smooth and glitch-free product launch by addressing these challenges during the development phase. Recognizing the importance of entering the EV space fully prepared, the company has opted to delay the SOP to ensure readiness of both the product and distribution channels.
Long-Term EV Strategy by Maruti Suzuki
Despite the delay, Maruti Suzuki remains committed to its long-term EV strategy, which includes launching six electric vehicles in India by fiscal 2031 across various segments, including hatchbacks and SUVs. With plans to localize parts and manufacture in India for global operations, the company believes it is entering the EV market at an opportune time, with an expected growth in EV market share.
Preparation Amidst Product Portfolio Expansion
Amid its ambitious plans for EVs, Maruti Suzuki continues to expand its product portfolio, with over 24 models in the pipeline. The company has been active in launching new models, delays are also expected for some ICE models. Going through a hectic phase of product development and launches, Maruti Suzuki remains focused on delivering innovative and competitive offerings to meet the growing demands of consumers.
The delayed launch of the Maruti eVX SUV underscores the challenges inherent in EV development but also reflects the brand’s commitment to ensuring a seamless and successful entry into the electric vehicle market.
