New Delhi: In a significant stride towards advancing indigenous artificial intelligence (AI) in India, the BharatGPT group, supported by Reliance Industries under the leadership of Mukesh Ambani and leading engineering institutions, is gearing up to launch its inaugural ChatGPT-style service in the upcoming month. Collaborating with eight prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), the AI model has garnered support from Reliance Jio Infocomm and the central government. During a recent technology conference in Mumbai, the consortium, consisting of Reliance and eight IITs, provided a glimpse of the model named Hanooman. Demonstrations showcased a motorcycle mechanic utilizing the AI bot in Tamil, a banker engaging in conversation in Hindi, and a developer from Hyderabad employing the tool to write computer code. Hanooman will function proficiently in 11 local languages, encompassing domains such as healthcare, governance, financial services, and education.
To enhance its accessibility, the Hanooman model will also feature speech-to-text capabilities, rendering it remarkably user-friendly.

Ganesh Ramakrishnan, chair of IIT Bombay’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering, emphasized the significance of this development, stating that Hanooman’s inclusiveness was instrumental in catering to a broader user base. In parallel, other startups like Sarvam and Krutrim, supported by prominent venture capital investors including Lightspeed Venture Partners and Vinod Khosla’s fund, are actively engaged in developing open-sourced AI models customized for India.

Reliance Jio, known for its telecommunications and retail ventures, aims to construct tailored models for specific applications. Notably, the conglomerate is already in the process of developing “Jio Brain,” an AI platform intended to leverage the power of AI across its extensive network of approximately 450 million subscribers.
Large Language Models (LLMs), such as Hanooman, exemplify systems that draw knowledge from vast datasets to generate coherent and natural responses. These models harness the capabilities of generative AI, a newer branch of artificial intelligence that has gained significant acclaim following the success of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The introduction of indigenous AI solutions like Hanooman showcases India’s commitment to fostering technological innovation and leveraging AI for diverse sectors, ultimately contributing to the nation’s digital evolution.
