New Delhi: Actor-director Rishab Shetty has ignited controversy with recent comments criticizing Bollywood for its portrayal of India. In an interview with MetroSaga, Shetty, a prominent figure in Kannada cinema, voiced his belief that Bollywood films often depict India negatively. He underscored his dedication to showcasing his nation, state, and language in a positive light through his work. “Indian films, particularly Bollywood, often portray India negatively. These so-called art films get showcased at international events and receive special attention. For me, my nation, my state, and my language are sources of pride. I believe in presenting them in a positive light to the world, and that’s exactly what I strive to do,” Shetty remarked.

However, Shetty’s remarks have provoked mixed reactions online. A Reddit post has brought additional scrutiny by highlighting a scene from Shetty’s own film, Kantara. The post features a clip showing Shetty pinching co-star Sapthami Gowda’s waist, which some viewers have found uncomfortable and inappropriate. Titled “Meanwhile Rishabh Shetty in his own film,” the post includes criticism of the normalization of sexual harassment in Indian cinema.

One Reddit user commented, “Also another scene where he was peeking when she is bathing. It was really uncomfortable to watch; no doubt the movie was great, but sexual harassment is too normalized in Indian cinema.” This clash between Shetty’s public criticism of Bollywood and the controversial scene from his film has intensified discussions about representation and conduct within the industry.
