Hyderabad / Jeddah, Monday:
A tragic road accident near Medina, Saudi Arabia, has claimed the lives of around 45 Indian Umrah pilgrims, most of them from Hyderabad, leaving several families shattered and prompting urgent diplomatic and government intervention. According to officials, the accident occurred when a bus carrying the pilgrims collided with a diesel tanker during the early hours of Monday, causing a massive fire that engulfed the vehicle within minutes.

Deadly Night-Time Collision

Preliminary reports indicate that the bus, which was travelling from Mecca to Medina, crashed shortly after midnight. Many passengers were reportedly asleep when the collision occurred, reducing their chances of escape as flames rapidly spread through the vehicle. Videos from the scene showed thick black smoke rising into the night sky, with local residents and emergency responders struggling to control the blaze.

Saudi authorities confirmed that only one passenger survived the crash. He has been identified as Mohd Abdul Shoaib, a 24-year-old Hyderabad resident who had been seated near the front of the bus. He is currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital. The remaining passengers — including women, elderly pilgrims and children — are feared dead.

Majority of Victims From Hyderabad

Telangana Police officials and community leaders say that most of the pilgrims on the ill-fated bus were from Mallepally, Asif Nagar, Nampally and other central Hyderabad neighbourhoods. Some families had sent up to seven members together for the Umrah pilgrimage.

Local authorities are still verifying the identities of the victims. Preliminary lists indicate that at least 18 of the deceased are from Hyderabad, though the final toll may be higher.

State Government Activates Emergency Helplines

Shocked by the scale of the tragedy, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy directed senior officials to coordinate closely with the Indian Embassy in Riyadh and the Consulate in Jeddah. The state government has set up a control room to provide information and assistance to worried families.

The chief minister has also instructed the state administration to prepare for potential repatriation of bodies once clearances are issued by Saudi authorities.

MEA and Embassy Step In

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has assured full support to the affected families. The Indian Consulate in Jeddah has opened a 24-hour emergency helpline for coordination with local authorities and relatives in India. Diplomatic teams are currently assisting with identification procedures, medical updates and repatriation logistics.

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar expressed deep grief over the incident, stating that all necessary arrangements were being made to support victims’ families.

Leaders Express Condolences

A wave of condolences poured in from political leaders across Telangana.

  • Asaduddin Owaisi, Hyderabad MP, said he has been in touch with families and urged the MEA to expedite the return of the deceased.
  • K. Chandrashekhar Rao, former Telangana chief minister, called the tragedy “heartbreaking” and sought strong government support for the bereaved.
  • K. T. Rama Rao also appealed for swift action in bringing the bodies home and providing relief to the families.

Families in Hyderabad in Deep Distress

In several neighbourhoods across Hyderabad, emotional scenes unfolded as families gathered at travel agencies that arranged the pilgrimage packages, seeking clarity about their loved ones. Many said they had spoken to them just hours before the tragedy.

Community organisations and local leaders have begun offering counselling and logistical help to affected families, noting that this is one of the deadliest overseas tragedies involving Hyderabad residents in recent memory.

Cause of the Crash Under Investigation

Saudi authorities are expected to launch a formal inquiry into the cause of the accident. Factors such as driver fatigue, road conditions, and night-time visibility are likely to be examined. Travel agencies overseeing Umrah pilgrimages may also face scrutiny regarding safety protocols and emergency preparedness.

Next Steps

  • Identification of the deceased will be completed in coordination with Saudi health authorities.
  • Repatriation of bodies is expected to begin once formalities are concluded.
  • The Telangana government will continue to provide updates through its control room.
  • Community leaders have called for stronger regulations to ensure safer travel arrangements for future Umrah and Hajj groups.

As officials work through the logistical and diplomatic complexities of the tragedy, Hyderabad continues to mourn the loss of dozens of lives — families united in faith, now united in grief.
