Skoda

New Delhi: Skoda has revealed plans to enter the competitive sub-Rs 10 lakh passenger vehicle market in India with the launch of its first sub-four-metre SUV in early 2025. The sub-compact SUV has been designed and developed in India. This will be Skoda’s re-entry into the segment, which aims to capture a significant market share.

Key Highlights:

  • Skoda’s sub-compact SUV will be based on the MQB A0 IN platform, emphasizing localisation.
  • Expected to feature a 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine, catering to the demands of the Indian market.
  • Skoda aims to double its India market share within a year of the SUV’s launch.
  • The SUV will boast unique features and target a 5-star NCAP crash test rating, appealing to Tier 3 and Tier 4 locations.
  • Skoda plans to set up a separate production line for the subcompact SUV near Pune.

Petr Janneba, brand director, Skoda India, expressed confidence in the potential of the new SUV and estimated sales of 1 lakh passenger vehicles within the first year of its launch. Additionally, the company aims to double its market share during the same period. Janeba highlights the SUV’s accessibility and premium appeal as it intends to penetrate emerging markets across India.

In an innovative approach, Skoda has launched a campaign to involve the Indian audience in naming the new SUV, with the winner receiving the SUV. The company has shortlisted five possible names and sought input from the public.

The upcoming subcompact SUV marks Skoda’s strategic return to India’s sub-Rs 10 lakh passenger vehicle market, filling the gap left by the Rapid’s discontinuation in 2021. With a focus on competitive pricing, local production and advanced features, Skoda aims to challenge established rivals like the Tata Nexon and Maruti Suzuki Brezza.

Overall, Skoda’s entry into the subcompact SUV segment underlines its commitment to the Indian market and its aspirations for significant growth in the coming years.
