New Delhi: As the 2024 Paris Paralympics approach, javelin thrower Sumit Antil is focused on both defending his gold medal and setting a new world record. The Paralympics, set to take place from August 28 to September 8, will feature India with a formidable team of 84 athletes across 12 different sports.

Antil, who captured gold at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics with a throw of 68.55 meters, is eager to surpass his own records. Since Tokyo, he has improved his best throw to 70.83 meters at the 2023 Para World Championships and 73.29 meters at the Hangzhou Para Asian Games. For Paris, Antil’s goal is to achieve a throw of 75 meters to secure gold, with the ultimate ambition of reaching the 80-meter mark.

Inspired by Neeraj Chopra, who recently won a silver medal at the Paris Olympics, Antil has intensified his preparations. Chopra’s impressive throw of 89.45 meters, accomplished despite an injury, has been a significant motivator for Antil. “Neeraj bhai’s performance was outstanding and truly motivating. His advice to stay calm and trust my training has been incredibly helpful,” Antil stated.

Despite dealing with a minor back injury, Antil remains optimistic and focused. This injury has affected his training, but he is determined to not let it hinder his performance in Paris. His preparations are supported by significant funding from the Union Sports Ministry’s Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), which has provided INR 58.97 lakh.

At just 26 years old, Antil has become a notable figure in his hometown of Sonepat, Haryana. After losing his left leg in an accident in 2015, his determination and family support have been crucial in his journey to success. Reflecting on his progress, Antil mentioned, “Since Tokyo, I have become more consistent and disciplined. The expectations are higher, and I’m committed to giving my best performance.”

Antil’s recent successes include consecutive gold medals at the World Para Athletics Championships in Paris (2023) and Kobe (2024). His drive for excellence continues, with the ultimate goal of reaching the 80-meter mark in the F-64 category. As the global stage awaits, all eyes will be on Antil as he strives to make history once more.
