3 sedans have safety ratings higher than SUVs

New Delhi: Despite a decline in demand, sedans in India have maintained their reputation as some of the highest-rated vehicles in terms of safety. In fact, several sedans surpass various SUVs on our roads when it comes to safety ratings. Under the updated crash test protocols at the Global New Car Assessment Program (Global NCAP), a total of eight cars sold in India have achieved a remarkable five-star safety rating in both the adult occupant protection and child occupant protection categories.

While five of them are SUVs — Safari, Harrier, Nexon, Taigun and Slavia — three are sedans — Virtus, Slavia and Verna.

Volkswagen Virtus

With a remarkable performance in safety tests, the Volkswagen Virtus has secured a five-star rating in both the adult occupant protection and child occupant protection categories. Scoring an impressive 29.71 points out of 34 in adult occupant protection and 42 points out of 49 in child occupant protection, the Virtus demonstrates its commitment to ensuring the safety of both adults and children on the road.The tested model of the Volkswagen Virtus came equipped with standard features such as two airbags and electronic stability control (ESC). Priced competitively in the Indian market, the Volkswagen Virtus ranges from Rs 11.56 lakh to Rs 19.41 lakh (ex-showroom).

Skoda Slavia

Similar to the Volkswagen Virtus, the Skoda Slavia has also achieved an impressive five-star rating in both the adult occupant protection and child occupant protection categories at the Global NCAP. They both scored the same points in these categories, further highlighting their commitment to excellent safety standards.Both the Skoda Slavia and the Volkswagen Virtus are built on Volkswagen Group’s MQB-AO-IN platform, specifically designed for the Indian market. These sedans, along with the Skoda Kushaq and the Volkswagen Taigun, are part of the India 2.0 project, demonstrating the Volkswagen Group’s significant investment of 1 billion euros in this endeavor.In terms of pricing, the Skoda Slavia ranges from Rs 11.53 lakh to Rs 19.13 lakh (ex-showroom), offering consumers a competitive pricing range for a sedan that prioritizes safety without compromising on features and performance.

Hyundai Verna

Further expanding the list of five-star safety rated sedans, the Hyundai Verna has also achieved impressive results at the Global NCAP. With a score of 28.18 points in the adult occupant protection category and 42 points in the child occupant protection category, the Hyundai Verna demonstrates its commitment to ensuring the safety of occupants.Equipped with six airbags and electronic stability control (ESC) as standard, the Hyundai Verna prioritizes occupant protection and offers essential safety features to enhance the driving experience.In terms of pricing, the Hyundai Verna is available in a range from Rs 11 lakh to Rs 17.42 lakh (ex-showroom), providing customers with options that cater to different budget preferences while not compromising on safety standards.

In the case of the Volkswagen Virtus and the Skoda Slavia, the bodyshell integrity was found to be stable during the crash tests at Global NCAP. However, it was unstable for the Hyundai Verna.
