Temporary Halt on Despatches for Toyota Innova Crysta, Fortuner, and Hilux in India

New Delhi: Toyota Kirloskar Motor has announced to temporarily suspend the dispatch of Innova Crysta, Fortuner and Hilux models in India. The decision has been taken after irregularities were discovered in the certification testing of diesel engine horsepower output. These three models collectively contribute about one-third of Toyota’s sales in India.

The irregularities identified during a special investigation by Toyota Industries Corporation (TICO) relate to ‘smoothing’ the power and torque curves during certification testing. However, Toyota clarified that this did not result in overstatement or over-claims on horsepower, torque or other powertrain-related values. Importantly, the irregularities have no impact on the emissions or safety of the affected vehicles.

While dispatches have been temporarily halted, Toyota Kirloskar Motor will continue production and accept orders for the Innova Crysta, Fortuner and Hilux. For vehicles already shipped but not yet delivered, the Company will carefully explain the status to customers before proceeding with registration and delivery.

In a global statement, Toyota Motor Corporation acknowledged the irregularities and stressed its commitment to reconfirm the data used for certification of the affected vehicles. The company deeply regrets any inconvenience and concern caused to customers.

The suspension of shipments by Toyota subsidiary TICO for the affected engines will be temporary, and Toyota plans to provide a detailed explanation to officials. This incident highlights the seriousness of certification irregularities and may prompt restructuring of the business concerned, which will require a change in mindset and improvement in corporate culture.

Toyota, as the party responsible for transferring the diesel engine business, promises continued support to revitalize TICO’s engine business and address the challenges posed by this situation. By ensuring transparency and accountability, Toyota aims to restore confidence in its certification processes and continue to provide reliable vehicles to its customers.
