Tesla Model Y India Launch: A New Milestone in the Electric Revolution

American electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla has finally made its highly anticipated debut in India. On July 15, 2025, the company opened its first showroom at Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and launched the Model Y electric SUV. This marks a major turning point for electric mobility in India.

Launch Price & Variants

The base Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) version of the Tesla Model Y starts at ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai). Tesla has introduced two battery configurations:

  • Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD)
  • Long Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD)

Speed & Performance

Tesla claims that the RWD model can accelerate from 0–100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds, while the Long Range AWD version achieves this feat in under 5 seconds. The top speed of the Model Y is approximately 217 km/h, reinforcing its performance SUV credentials.

Range & Charging

The Model Y offers a maximum certified WLTP range of 622 km, making it ideal for long-distance travel in India. With Tesla’s fast-charging technology, the vehicle can gain several hundred kilometers of range in just 15 minutes, supported by ongoing development of charging infrastructure in the country.

Booking & Delivery Timeline

Bookings are currently open in Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram via Tesla’s official website. Deliveries are expected to begin by the third quarter of 2025.

Tesla has officially begun accepting non-refundable bookings for Model Y in India with a ₹22,000 token amount paid via Tesla’s website and Mumbai showroom f. This marks the start of a premium purchase experience in the Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram markets. According to the Financial Express and Free Press Journal, deliveries for the base RWD variant are slated to commence after September, firmly within the third quarter of 2025 .

Furthermore, specialist tech outlets like India Today report that the Long Range RWD version—featuring extended range and enhanced features—will begin shipping slightly later, likely in Q4 2025 . Tesla’s strategy appears staged: begin with the base variant to establish presence, followed by premium trims for wider appeal. Prospective buyers should therefore expect the base model in Q3, with the long-range variant arriving in the final quarter of the year.

Exterior & Interior Options

Tesla offers the Model Y in seven exterior colors and two interior trims in India. Inside, the car features Tesla’s signature minimalistic design, highlighted by a large touchscreen display.

Full Self-Driving (FSD) Feature

Tesla is offering the FSD (Full Self-Driving) package in India, priced around ₹6 lakh. However, under Indian law, this system does not permit fully autonomous driving. Driver supervision remains mandatory.

Manufacturing Prospects in India

During the launch event, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis invited Tesla to begin local manufacturing in India, citing the favorable environment for electric vehicle investment. At present, Tesla imports its vehicles from its Shanghai Gigafactory in China. A shift to local production could significantly bring down the prices.

Conclusion: India’s EV Future Begins

The introduction of the Model Y in India does more than launch a premium EV—it energizes the entire EV market. While electric vehicles currently represent just 2–5% of total car sales in India, Tesla’s entry is poised to accelerate this share significantly.

Under government policies—like a 15% import tariff waiver for companies investing ₹4,150 crore and setting up local production within three years—Tesla’s move could inspire many other global automakers to localize production. Tesla’s best-in-class software, battery innovation, and over-the-air updates are likely to spur technological upgrades in local competitors like Tata, Mahindra, MG, and Hyundai.

Local assembly or manufacturing would also help expand the supply chain, charging infrastructure, and after-sales service—enhancing customer experiences and driving faster EV adoption. With the aim of achieving 30% EV penetration by 2030, the Model Y’s launch could be a foundational milestone in India’s electric mobility mission.
