Toyota to Unveil ‘Mini Fortuner’ SUV, Likely Named FJ, for Global Debut

New Delhi: Toyota is preparing to introduce a new rugged SUV, which will be offered as a more compact and cost-effective alternative to the famous Fortuner. Launching globally later this year, the SUV is expected to be launched in Thailand first.

This upcoming SUV, previously hinted as an “affordable Fortuner”, is part of Toyota’s IMV0 project, which expands beyond pickups to include SUV variants. Sharing its underpinnings with the Toyota Hilux Champ pickup, the new SUV is expected to sport a boxy, retro aesthetic along with premium enhancements. It will retain the 2,750 mm wheelbase shared with the Innova Crysta and Fortuner, potentially offering flexible seating configurations.

Inside, the SUV is likely to inherit the smartly designed dashboard from the Hilux Champ, enhanced with premium materials and advanced technology features. Powertrain options are expected to include diesel engines ranging from 2.4-litre to 2.8-litre, as well as petrol engines like the 2.7-litre.

While the SUV is promising for the Indian market, especially after the cancellation of the codenamed 340d C-SUV, its introduction remains uncertain. However, with the ongoing localization of Toyota’s IMV platform in India and the demand for a strong SUV priced between the Innova Crysta and the Fortuner, there is speculation about its potential in the Indian market.
