Tsitsipas Pursues Olympic Dream, Targets Medal at Paris Games
New Delhi: Greek tennis sensation Stefanos Tsitsipas has expressed a deep-rooted connection to the Olympic Games, underscoring their unique significance due to their Greek heritage. Tsitsipas is eager to achieve his lifelong ambition of winning an Olympic medal at the upcoming Paris Games, set to commence this month. Historically, Greece, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, has secured three Olympic medals in tennis, all at the inaugural modern Olympics in Athens in 1896.
“Greece and the Olympic Games are inseparable, like bread and butter. It’s been a dream of mine since I started playing tennis,” said Tsitsipas, currently ranked world number 12, in an interview with Stats Perform. “Ever since I first picked up a tennis racket, I aspired to be an athlete participating in such a prestigious event. Aiming for a medal is something truly extraordinary.”
“My dream is continuously evolving and staying alive, and my journey towards this goal is steadily advancing. For me, the ultimate success would be walking away from the Games with a medal,” he added.
The Olympic tennis competition will run from July 27 to August 4 at the renowned Roland Garros stadium, the same venue that hosts the French Open. Tsitsipas has exhibited exceptional prowess on these clay courts. In 2021, he reached a significant milestone by making it to the French Open final. Furthermore, in the last two editions of this esteemed Grand Slam tournament, Tsitsipas has consistently reached the quarter-finals, showcasing his skill and reliability on this challenging surface.
“Preparing well before the Games start in August is something I’m looking forward to,” Tsitsipas said. “I had great success a few years ago at the same stadium, playing in the finals of Roland Garros. Returning with that confidence and the memories in my mind motivates me to strive and work towards the same end goal, replicating the amazing run I had a few years ago.”
