Wayanad Landslides: 19 Dead, Hundreds Feared Trapped in Kerala

New Delhi: On Tuesday, massive landslides struck several hilly areas near Meppadi in Wayanad district, Kerala, leading to widespread destruction and concerns that hundreds may be trapped. The tragic event has already claimed 19 lives, and ongoing rescue efforts are facing significant challenges due to adverse weather and difficult terrain.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) quickly mobilized resources to address the crisis. They have dispatched multiple response teams, including Fireforce and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), to the affected locations. Additionally, another NDRF team is on its way to Wayanad to support the rescue operations.

In a Facebook statement, the KSDMA noted that two teams from the Kannur Defence Security Corps have also been assigned to assist in the rescue efforts. Local reports indicate that many individuals are feared trapped under the landslide debris, with the situation worsening due to continuous heavy rainfall. These conditions are severely complicating rescue operations and increasing the risk for rescuers.

Around 250 personnel from various organizations, including Fire and Rescue, Civil Defence, NDRF, and the Local Emergency Response Team, are engaged in rescue operations in the Churalmala area of Wayanad. These teams are working around the clock to locate and rescue those trapped in the affected areas. The complex and dangerous nature of the operation requires careful coordination and effort from all involved.

Authorities are appealing to the public to avoid the disaster-hit areas to ensure that rescue operations can proceed without interruption and to guarantee the safety of both the rescue teams and potential survivors. The focus remains on saving lives and providing relief to those affected by this devastating event.
