Zaheer Khan Joins Lucknow Super Giants as Mentor for IPL 2025
New Delhi: Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are excited to announce the appointment of former Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan as their new mentor, ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. This development marks Zaheer’s return to the IPL after a two-year hiatus. From 2018 to 2022, Zaheer played a significant role with the Mumbai Indians, helping them achieve five IPL titles.
The formal announcement of Zaheer’s new role will take place at the RPSG Group Headquarters on Wednesday. His appointment will fill the position left vacant by Gautam Gambhir, who departed LSG last year to rejoin his former team, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Under Gambhir’s guidance, KKR clinched the IPL title in 2024, and he now serves as the head coach of the Indian national team.
During his tenure with Mumbai Indians, Zaheer held prominent positions as the Director of Cricket and later as the Head of Global Development. His wealth of experience is expected to be a major asset for LSG, particularly as the team currently lacks a bowling coach. This role has been unfilled since South African fast bowler Morne Morkel left to join Gambhir’s coaching staff.
In addition to his mentoring duties, Zaheer will play a crucial role in scouting and player development during the off-season. His extensive IPL experience includes stints with Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Delhi Daredevils, where he accumulated 102 wickets in 100 matches over 10 seasons, with an economy rate of 7.58. His last IPL appearance was in 2017 as the captain of Delhi Daredevils, following which he retired from professional cricket.
Under the leadership of head coach Justin Langer, LSG‘s coaching team, which includes Lance Klusener and Shane Watson, will be further strengthened with Zaheer’s addition as they gear up for the upcoming season.
