Zimbabwe Wicketkeeper Clive Madande Sets Unfortunate Record for Byes in Test Match
New Delhi: In a difficult debut for Zimbabwe, wicketkeeper Clive Madande has set an unwelcome record during the one-off Test against Ireland in Belfast. The 24-year-old, struggling behind the stumps, allowed a remarkable 42 byes in a single innings, surpassing the previous record of 37 byes set by England’s Les Ames in 1934.
Ames, revered as one of the greatest wicketkeeper-batsmen in cricket history, had set his record against Australia at The Oval. Madande’s record-setting byes contributed significantly to Ireland’s total of 250 runs in their first innings, which gave them a 40-run lead over Zimbabwe’s 210.
Madande’s struggle with byes was not entirely due to his own errors, as he faced deliveries that frequently veered down the leg side and exhibited late swing after passing the bat. Despite these challenges, Zimbabwe’s bowlers, Tanaka Chivanga and Blessing Muzarabani, displayed impressive skills. Chivanga claimed his first three Test wickets and Muzarabani took 3-53.
At the close of the rain-affected second day, Zimbabwe was 28 runs behind Ireland, with a score of 12-0 in their second innings. Joylord Gumbie and Prince Masvaure were batting as Zimbabwe sought to close the gap. Earlier, Peter Moor set a new record for the highest Test score by an Ireland opener with his 79.
As the match progresses, Zimbabwe will need to overcome their deficit with all 10 second-innings wickets still intact.
