Range Rover Sport EV to be Unveiled This Year as Part of JLR’s Revised EV Roadmap
New Delhi: JLR (formerly Jaguar Land Rover) is preparing to unveil an electric version of the Range Rover Sport later this year, which will be the second of six new EVs coming to international markets by 2026. Following the radical reimagining transformation strategy initiated by former CEO Thiry Bolloré three years ago, current CEO Adrian Mardel has now unveiled an updated electrification strategy for the company.
“We talked about six Land Rovers by 2026. The reality is we’re likely to have six JLR products by 2026,” said Mardell. “We’re taking our time to make sure we put the best vehicles we’ve ever developed into the marketplace with that new technology.” This reworked electrification plan aims to allow for further development time and adapt to shifts in consumer demand.
The revised strategy will encompass the introduction of four Range Rover EVs and two Jaguar EVs by 2026. These models will adopt the 800V charging infrastructure for rapid top-ups. Furthermore, JLR is evaluating the possibility of manufacturing EVs in India.
Land Rover EVs: Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Velar, Evoque
The new strategy will be led by the Range Rover EV and Range Rover Sport EV, both of which are based on the MLA platform. Additionally, two small SUVs based on the new EMA platform are expected, likely to include the electrified Range Rover Evoque and Velar. Electric options for the Discovery Sport and Defender will follow suit, expected to appear after 2026.
Jaguar EVs: Four-door GT, Ultra-Luxury SUV
Jaguar’s electrification plans include two electric models by 2026. One is a four-door GT that’s expected to be revealed later this year, while the other is a luxury SUV that aims to take on the Bentley Bentayga. Both EVs will be based on Jaguar’s JEA architecture, with a luxury sedan following soon after.
JLR EVs: Battery, Range, Performance
While details regarding performance figures and battery specifications are unknown, JLR has indicated that the upcoming Range Rover Sport EV will have the power and performance to go anywhere on par with a V8. All models will feature 800V charging hardware, enabling charging speeds of up to 270kW for faster top-ups.
JLR is also considering producing EVs in India pending the approval of the India-UK free trade agreement. If realized, the move would result in the largest manufacturing facility for JLR outside the UK, with Sanand, Gujarat being the primary location under consideration for the investment.
