Usman Khawaja Rebuked by ICC for Displaying Personal Message in Perth Test

New Delhi: In a surprise development, Australian opener Usman Khawaja has been reprimanded by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for “displaying personal messages” during the Australia vs Pakistan Test in Perth. Khawaja wore a black armband during the match and the ICC has accused him of violating clothing and equipment rules.

Khawaja’s protests focused on messages supporting civilians in Gaza, prompting the ICC action. Last week, he criticized the ICC for censuring them and vowed to keep advocating on such issues. An ICC spokesperson said Khawaja had breached Section F of the clothing and equipment rules by not seeking prior approval from Cricket Australia and the ICC for displaying personal messages.

The cricketer had earlier used slogans on his shoes, which led to a warning from the ICC. Despite covering the messages with tape, Khawaja took the field wearing a black armband, resulting in him facing the charge.

ICC rules clearly state that players and team officials cannot send personal messages related to political, religious or racial activities without prior permission. This is not the first time the ICC has dealt with such incidents; In 2014, England all-rounder Moeen Ali was banned for wearing a wristband bearing Gaza-related messages.

Khawaja, 36, is expected to feature in Australia’s upcoming Test against Pakistan, with all eyes on how the incident could affect his on-field contribution. The second test is scheduled to start on Tuesday.
