Aditya L1 Nears Sun Study Milestone: Set to Enter Final Orbit on January 6

New Delhi: India’s ambitious solar mission, Aditya L1, is on the verge of a significant milestone as it approaches its final orbit scheduled for January 6. Launched by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) on September 2, 2023, Aditya L1 is the country’s first mission. A journey dedicated to the study of the Sun. The spacecraft is set to enter ‘halo orbit’ around Lagrange Point 1 (L1), a strategically stable position in the Sun-Earth system.

Lagrange points are regions where the gravitational forces between celestial bodies reach an equilibrium, leading to a relatively fixed position. Aditya L1’s destination, L1, is approximately 1.5 million kilometers from Earth, providing an advantageous vantage point for solar observations. ISRO officials said the spacecraft has already reached the L1 point and the upcoming maneuver on January 6 will place it in the desired orbit.

The complex orbital maneuver, known as a ‘halo orbit’, is a three-dimensional trajectory that enhances the spacecraft’s ability to observe the Sun from different angles. This challenging step is a pioneering effort by ISRO, requiring precise thruster firing to reach the desired orbit.

Aditya L1 carries seven scientific payloads, including instruments such as the Visible Emission Line Coronagraph (VELC), the Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (SUIT), and the High-Energy L1 Orbiting X-ray Spectrometer (HEL1OS). These payloads enable studies of solar phenomena such as flares, radiation and magnetic fields.

As of Wednesday, Aditya L1 has spent 124 days in space, during which it has actively collected scientific data and imagery. The spacecraft’s unique capabilities, such as a coronagraph that allows scientists to examine the Sun’s surface more closely, make it a valuable addition to solar research. The mission’s coronagraph features a small hidden disk, an important innovation that allows scientists to study the Sun’s corona with unprecedented closeness.

The successful entry of Aditya L1 into halo orbit around L1 will provide comprehensive access to solar storms and emissions before they impact Earth. The mission is closely watched around the world because of its potential to increase our understanding of solar activity at different wavelengths.
